W.W. Stewart established John Hay Cigars in 1882 in Newmanstown, Penn. The cigars were named after John Hay who made his mark in history books for being the assistant private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and ambassador to Great Britain. He also served as secretary of state to Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.
The cigar company that takes his name has a storied history of its own.
