Longtime friends Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport had no experience in hair when they set out to reinvent the barbershop in their hometown of Austin, Tex. They blended their entrepreneurial expertise in marketing and finance to create a fun hair experience for customers and to shake up the traditional salon business model.
When they opened doors at the first Birds Barbershop, Portman and Rapaport treated Austinites to haircuts in an ultra-cool, modern hangout, equipped with free beer and vintage arcade games, giving their stylists free rein to express their creative genius one follicle at a time. One shop grew to four as the shop became wildly popular.
But the company’s point-of-sale credit card solution tethered its processing capabilities to its brick-and-mortar shops, at least until this March. Birds Barbershop partnered with Intuit GoPayment to take its shop mobile – straight to the sidewalk of a busy intersection in downtown Austin. Within a matter of about an hour, a pop-up salon was set up, offering buzz cuts, trims and, in the case of one little boy, a Mohawk. Three stylists, four hours, and nearly 60 haircuts later, Birds’ had succeeded in taking its barbershop mobile for the first time, thanks to GoPayment.
