After careful consideration, the GoPayment Team has decided to discontinue development for the BlackBerry platform as of January 2012.
What this means is that we will not add new BlackBerry devices to our list of supported phones and tablets and will no longer advertise GoPayment’s compatibility with BlackBerry. Additionally, the GoPayment App for BlackBerry devices that are currently supported will not receive future updates.
We apologize to BlackBerry users but hope the information below helps to explain our position on BlackBerry support moving forward as well as answer any questions you may have about the decision.
We wish you and your businesses continued growth and success in 2012.
Q: Why was the decision made to no longer develop GoPayment for BlackBerry devices?
A: Unlike Android and Apple operating systems, the BlackBerry operating system does not support every device in a consistent manner, which results in a poor user experience on many BlackBerry devices. This has made it nearly impossible for us to support all BlackBerry devices with a good user experience through the same application, which was our ultimate goal. Furthermore, BlackBerry recently announced that all new devices will need to be developed on the latest new operating system (BlackBerry 10) which is not “backwards compatible” with existing apps. As a result, we had to make the difficult decision to focus on platforms that can provide the best experience for our customers.
Q: Does the new grey GoPayment Card Reader support BlackBerry devices?
A: No, since we are no longer developing for the BlackBerry platform, the BlackBerry app is not compatible with our new card reader.
Q: But I’m already using GoPayment on my BlackBerry. What does this mean for me?
A: If you’re currently using GoPayment, you will be able to continue processing credit cards as usual (whether you’re swiping cards with our free credit card reader, using a Bluetooth reader, or key-entering credit card numbers), nothing should change for you. The only thing new is that we will not be making future updates to the GoPayment app for your device. You are still a supported GoPayment customer.
Q: If I want to use GoPayment on a new BlackBerry, do I have any options?
A: Yes. Though our new free card reader will not be compatible with BlackBerry devices, BlackBerry users can still take credit cards anytime, anywhere with GoPayment by accessing GoPayment.Intuit.com on their web browser and key-entering credit card numbers online.
